About Us
My experience in the world of antiques began in the late 1970's when I was given the opportunity to work for Graeme Brown, a leading Melbourne antique dealer. I was assigned to assist the cabinet makers and polishers in the firm with the introductory tasks of the restoration process.
These highly qualified European craftsmen were in great demand to restore early antique pieces, such as chairs, desks, tables, sofas bookcases etc. A number of antique dealers often came to Graeme's craftsmen for advice. This gave me a growing awareness of the various construction techniques as well as veneering and polishing methods used by the 18th and 19th Century masters; my particular area of interest today. My early association with the Melbourne craftsmen has been a strong influence in developing quality workmanship with emphasis on detail while preserving the integrity of the antique pieces involved.
40 years experience
An increasing knowledge of specific periods of history with their associated furnishings became a stepping-stone to another important influence. I had the very good fortune to be introduced to a man regarded as the doyen of the antique trade for many decades in Australia. He was W.F. Bradshaw, ensconced behind the famous double doors at 96 Queen Street Woollahra whose friendship and business association I greatly valued. Over a period of almost twenty years, he enriched my understanding of and appreciation for Neoclassical design and English Regency furniture, two areas of special interest to him.
With his inspiration and encouragement, I studied more closely the design elements necessary for me to complete a number of personal projects as well as commissions. Further contacts were established with specialised craftsmen in London and Paris in the areas of veneers, brass fittings, mounts and other requirements. Over the last forty years all these factors combined, have shaped my current business at Classic Antique Restoration.
